Volleyball Clinches Playoff Spot With Win Over DuBois
McKeesport, PA. - Entering Saturday, the Penn State Greater Allegheny volleyball team (15-7, 7-2)I need a win over Penn State DuBois (11-11, 4-6) to clinch their first Penn State University Athletic Conference playoff spot since 2014. They did just that picking up a 3-1 win centered around a high-powered offensive attack.
The PSUGA attackers combined for 55 kills and forced Dubois into bad situations to get the win. Now PSUGA can focus on clinching a home playoff game during the final full week of the season.
After a battle early on in set one PSUGA took control going on a 5-0 run to take a 18-14 lead halfway through the set. They would finish it off allowing just one point over the last eight points of the set to take a 25-15 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The PSUGA offense got on a roll in the second set, scoring seven the first eight points, taking a 7-1 lead. However, that lead would be erased Midway through the set when Dubois scored nine straight points take a 17-16 lead.
The Dubois lead would grow to as much as 19-17 before PSUGA fought back and overtook Dubois 25-23 5 and led the match 2-0.
Penn State DuBois wouldn't go down without a fight taking the third set 25-21, forcing a fourth set with GA leading 2-1. PSUGA would handle their business in the fourth set leading 15-10 halfway through the set and riding it tap 25-21 set win and a 3-1 match win.
Alex Ellis (Derry, PA./ Derry Area HS) lead the way with 19 kills on 38 total attacks pacing the PSUGA offense. Alexa Martell (Elizabeth, PA./Elizabeth Forward HS) and Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport HS) addee 14 and 12 kills respectively in the win. Julianna Brill (Mount Jackson, VA./Stonewall Jackson HS) ledthe defense with 20 digs while Andrea Ghiloni (Granville, OH./Granville HS) added 39 assists.
The win guarantees PSUGA one of the four playoff spots in the PSUAC west division. With three conference games left on their schedule PSUGA will now be fighting for the team's first ever home playoff game are they try to grab one of the top two seeds.
The PSUGA volleyball team returns to action on Monday when they take on Butler County Community College in non-conference action. Tip-off inside the Wunderly gym is scheduled for 7 p.m.
