Volleyball Set for Non-Conference Action vs. BCCC
The PSUGA Volleyball team gets one more non-conference tuneup against Butler County Community College on Friday at 7 p.m. They are looking to ride their current five game winning streak towards a potential playoff spot.
McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (8-9, 2-3) is riding high on their current five game winning streak as they get set to take on Butler County CC in non-conference action on Friday at 7 p.m. They currently sit in fourth place in the Penn State University Athletic Conference West Division and are clinging on to the final playoff spot in the west.
PSUGA faced off against four teams from the PSUAC East Division at the PSUAC Crossover Tournament. They did not lose a set in their four matches and were riding high as one of the top performers in the tournament. Alix Ellis (Derry, Pa./Derry Area HS) and Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport HS) led the offense throughout the tournament helping PSUGA to the perfect record.
Ellis led the duo with 19 kills while Holtzman finished right behind her with 13 kills to lead the offense. Freshman Juliana Brill (Mount Jackson, VA./Stonewall Jackson HS) also stepped up in a new role as the team’s libero grabbing 25 digs in the team’s two wins on day two of the tournament.
Entering play on Friday, PSUGA sits in the fourth spot in the PSUAC West Division holding on to the final playoff spot from the West. This mid-season surge has helped get them into the playoff race and a big game against PSU-Mont Alto this weekend and another against PSU-Beaver on Tuesday could decide whether they make the PSUAC Tournament or get sent home packing.
PSUGA will look to continue to grow in non-conference play prior to that big match on Saturday when they face Butler County CC on Friday. Friday’s meeting will be the second all-time matchup between these two teams with PSUGA holding the lone win. That match was back in 2014 with PSUGA taking a 3-1 win.
Current PSUGA Volleyball head coach Alyssa Finocchi led her team in that game with 10 kills on 27 total attacks while also picking up a team leading six digs. Former Lion Brianna Audette finished the match with 18 assists.
Tip-off for Friday’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the campus of Butler County CC. PSUGA plays one more road game before returning home on October 9th against PSU-Beaver.
