PSUGA Volleyball Wraps Up Season With Match Against New Ken
The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team wraps up their 2018-2019 season when they face PSU-New Kensington at 2 p.m. Their young core looks to finish strong as they head towards the offseason and look to get another year better.
McKeesport, PA. – After falling to Penn State Fayette their last time out, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team (9-14, 2-7) wraps up their 2018-2019 season when they take on Penn State New Kensington (7-12, 0-9) on Saturday at 2 p.m. PSUGA is looking to finish the season strong and send their young core into the offseason with some momentum to build off of.
They fought hard in their match with Fayette setting themselves up for chances to win each set throughout the night. After dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-22 PSUGA fought to the very end in their final set of the night. They forced the win by two rule , but weren’t able to finish it off falling 26-24 and losing the set 26-24.
The loss officially eliminated PSUGA from the Penn State University Athletic Conference playoff tournament, however, the future is still bright with a young core of talent that will propel them for the future. Led by star middle hitter Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS), who leads the team with 173 kills this season, and libero Kimmy Tinker (Ewing, IL./Benton Consolidated HS), who leads the team with 167 digs, PSUGA is looking for success for the program into the future.
Led by head coach Alyssa Finocchi this year’s freshman stars will be another year older and poised for a playoff run. It all starts with gaining momentum at the end of the season, and that is what PSUGA plans to try and do against Penn State New Kensington.
PSU-New Kensington enters the match coming off of a 3-0 loss at the hands of Penn State Beaver on Tuesday. They dropped the three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-19, and 25-15 handing them their fourth straight loss. Kaylea Flick led the team with 14 kills on 45 total attacks and Erin Tumas led the way with nine digs.
PSUGA has had success against Penn State New Kensington in the past with a record of 12-4 in the previous 16 matchups between the two teams. Earlier this year, PSUGA picked up a 3-1 win over New Kensington. Ellis led the team with 13 kills on 32 total attacks while Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, PA./McKeesport HS) contributed 13 kills on 28 total attacks in the win.
Tip-off for Saturday’s contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside the Wunderly Gymnasium. It is the last home game of the season, so come out and support your volleyball team as they get ready for an offseason where they train to continue to get better.
