Men's Soccer Preps for Carlow University
(McKeesport, PA)
UPDATE 8/30/21 - Game will now be played on Thursday, Sept 2, 2021 at 4:30pm. Story originally published on 8/29/21.
After two early season friendlies, the Greater Allegheny Men's Soccer team is ready to play its first match that counts in the overall season table this Wednesday, Sept 1.
The regular season was supposed to get under way last Wednesday with a match against Westmoreland County Community College but the opponent asked to reschedule for a later date in the season.
GA Men's Soccer has played an intrasquad friendly that ended 4-4 and a second friendly against Thiel College ending in a 0-0 draw last Thursday.
Coach Jason Broadwater said, "I thought we put in some good work against Thiel. They're a physical team and play in a tough conference and we hung right with them. We had a lot of chances to score but sometimes soccer can be a funny game where the ball doesn't want to go into the net. Overall, positive step forward for us."
Greater Allegheny is led by team captain, Namy Makiese (Allerdice High School/ Pittsburgh, PA). The 4-year player is a steady presence out there for the guys in blue and white. "Namy is a fantastic leader of men," added, Broadwater. "He's the type of person and player we want leading this team. He's cool under pressure, composed, and battles incredibly hard each training session and match. He's set a high bar."
22 players have made their debut this season for GA. Some of those players lost a season due to the pandemic and others are new to the program.
"It has been fantastic being able to play a lot of guys thus far. I sincerely appreciate how hard the guys are working to improve," said Coach Broadwater.
Kickoff for Wednesday's match is at 4:30pm at Greater Allegheny Field on the campus of Penn State Greater Allegheny. Fans are able to live stream the game https://www.athleticsga.com/video-embed
GA travels to Pitt - Greensburg next Sunday, Sept 5 for their first road contest of the season.
