Golf Preps for 1st Home Match
(Mckeesport, PA)
It will have been 569 days since Penn State Greater Allegheny Men's and Women's Golf last had a home golf match when they compete this Saturday at 1pm. Sept 26, 2019 was the last time GA golfers teed it up at Youghiogheny Country Club.
GA will host Penn State Fayette, Brandywine, and New Kensington in a modified competitive format. The front 9 of the course will be an individual competition with awards for first, second, and third place. The back 9 will be a 3-person scramble with awards for first, second, and third place.
Additional awards for skills competition on 5 different holes have been added including closest to the pin.
Although this is the first home match of the season, this will be the second time GA has competed this spring. They played in the New Kensington Invitational a few weeks ago. That event was an individual competition.
Coach Mark Valko, when asked about what he's looking for from this Satuday's match, said, "I am looking to see more consistency from our team. We have been working on a few things in practice such as how to compete as a scramble team which changes the strategy as compared to individual competition."
It has been a long and winding road to even get to this point as life begins to slowly return to some normalcy.
"I believe that our golfers feel very good about the opportunity to golf this spring. They feel like they were deprived of their normal fall season because of Covid. We weren't sure if we were even going to have a season until a few weeks before this spring season started but we, Penn State as a whole, pulled it together and are making it happen currently.", added Valko.
The high temperature for Saturday is forecasted at 57 degrees. Youghiogheny Country Club is in excellent shape and ready for the group of Penn State golfers about to descend on the course.
