Despite a strong pitching performace from Nathan Grice (McKeesport, PA. / McKeesport HS) Penn State Greater Allegheny came up just short in Game 1 of the season opening double header on Saturday, March 13 vs Penn State Mont Alto losing 2-1.
Zach Wilson (Cartersville, GA. / Woodland HS) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second with an RBI single. The lead would be short-lived. Mont Alto tied the game in the top of the 5th and went ahead for good in the top of the 6th.
Brett Yuhas (Munhall, PA. / Steel Valley HS) led the way for GA with 2 hits.
Game 2 Recap
Greater Allegheny came flying out of the gate scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Paced by a fantastic pitching performance from Matt Smith (North Versailles, PA. / East Allegheny HS) who went five scoreless innings.
Fortune's changed in the top of the 6th when Mont Alto put 2 runs on the board to pull closer. Greater Allegheny got one run back in the bottom of the 6th with a Douglas Painter (Warren, OH. / Eastern Gateway CC) RBI single.
The back and forth continued to push the game to extra innings when Mont Alto went ahead in the top of the 8th with a sacrifice fly. Greater Allegheny was unable to fully punch back despite a Brian Woods (North Huntingdon, PA. / Norwin HS) double in the bottom of the 8th to put the tying run in scoring position. Final score Mont Alto 6 - Greater Allegheny 5 in 8 innings.
