McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team (8-13, 6-10) wrapped up their regular season on Monday when they fell to Penn State Fayette (21-6, 13-3) three sets to nothing.
Even though Fayette picked up the sweep, PSUGA competed throughout this contest. They jumped ahead early in the first set 5-1 and looked like they were taking control. However, Fayette came back to take that set 25-14 after rallying back. Fayette dominated the second set winning 25-10, but PSUGA once again fought hard in the third set only trailing by two as the set was coming to a close. However, it would be Fayette that was able to close out the match and pick up the 25-21 victory and the three sets to nothing sweep.
On a night in which seniors and 2+2 players were honored before the game, Senior Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) shined offensively with a team leading 7 kills on a team leading 23 total attack opportunities. Marina Selmi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objectivo) played a big role offensively as well collecting four kills on 11 total attack opportunities. Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) collected a team high 7 digs on the day and helped keep some big rallies going.
PSUGA Volleyball finished their 2017/18 season going 8-13 overall and 6-10 in Penn State University Athletic Conference Play. It was a season of many ups and downs including a 2-8 start to the season before a six game winning streak brought them right back into playoff contention. However, it would not be enough as they dropped their final four contests and were eliminated from playoff contention.
Even though the outcome was not what PSUGA volleyball wanted, it was still a special night as all 2+2’s and Seniors were recognized before the game. Hayley Maksin, Marina Selmi, Morgan Greeley (Roulette, Pa./Port Allegheny HS), Lacey Strotman (Bunola, Pa./Elizabeth Forward), Rachel Weaver (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield), and Laura Vazquez Diaz were honored as they were playing their last game in a PSUGA uniform.
Good luck to all the seniors and 2+2 players in their future endeavors and thank you for another great season of PSUGA volleyball.
