McKeesport, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball team volunteered at UPMC McKeesport on Thursday, September 22, 2016.
Their task was to bundle backpacks full of food for over 60 children in the area who are in need. The YMCA-based program provides food for children who may not otherwise have enough meals over the weekend and rely on meals provided by their school during the week for most of their nutrition.
Taking the time to give back to the community is undeniably important and our team was excited for the opportunity to help. Our team talks a lot about our performance and behavior on and off of the court. Two of our reminders and motivational quotes are "good enough is never enough" and "be above the line". So with the opportunity to volunteer, the team wanted to give a little more than what was being asked. The team paid out-of-pocket for a little extra surprise to go home with the children this weekend. We added puzzles, games, coloring books with crayons, and some crafts to the bags in hopes that it brings just a little more happiness to someone over the weekend.
Junior outside hitter Laura Vazquez-Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) reflected on the occasion, "It feels good to give back to children who are in need. It's a very enlightening experience, you sometimes don't recognize that there are children right here in our community who could go hungry if this program didn't exist. It also makes me feel proud of our team that we are together on and off the court and able to give back to the community."
